I lived it. And I’m still living it. Every day.
How I Went From Chronic Illness to Radiant Health
In my 50s, I have more energy and endurance than I did at 40. I wake up looking forward to the day ahead — ready to practice yoga, explore the outdoors, dive into a good novel, and connect with family and friends. But it wasn’t always this way.
The Wake-Up Call
At 40, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid condition. Because my functional medicine doctor went beyond conventional thyroid testing, she uncovered the root cause behind my:
Crushing fatigue
Brain fog that made simple tasks feel impossible
Unexplained weight gain (despite increased exercise)
Constantly cold hands and feet
Mood swings
Digestive distress
The down side? She prescribed natural thyroid medication and said I’d be on it “for life.” On the up side, she recommended lifestyle changes that opened the door to deeper healing and my path to wholehearted wellness.
The Deeper Discovery
As with so many chronic illnesses, my autoimmune condition was just the tip of the iceberg. Over the years, I’ve also addressed:
Toxic overload: Mold illness and mercury toxicity
Hormonal chaos: Adrenal burnout and major hormonal imbalances
Other challenges: Gallstones, eczema, candida, iron-deficiency anemia
I know, it’s a lot. Especially since many of these conditions never fully disappear—they lie dormant and can flare at any time. But, if I can thrive — so can you!
The Long Road to Healing
Discovering all of these health issues didn’t happen overnight. Finding answers was a slow process. Healing has taken years (and still continues). But, one thing became very clear: chronic stress consistently took center stage.
Leading up to the diagnosis, we had moved across the country, changed jobs, struggled with infertility, adopted our son, and moved again. After the diagnosis, we moved several times, and that meant finding new doctors each time.
Plus, I was the primary caregiver (and sometimes home educator) of our very spirited, twice exceptional son. Talk about flares!
But, through extensive self-education and experimentation, care from integrative doctors, and the profound power of yoga and meditation, I overcame all of these health challenges and put stress in its proper place — offstage.
Using this holistic approach, I completely transformed my life.
Where I Am Today
I am not “cured”—some conditions (like Hashimoto’s) don’t go away completely. But I am committed to keeping them at bay so I can continue to thrive.
I’m thrilled to share that I am off thyroid medication, no longer need iron supplements or infusions, and even got off the adrenal support supplements a different doctor said I’d need “for life.”
THEN: Completely depleted, overwhelmed, barely functioning NOW: Brimming with vitality, helping others, and embracing life fully
The Reality: It’s Not Easy, But It’s Possible
Honestly, it sucks: the chronic stress, the chronic conditions. And I wish I could promise you a life without them—a life of perfect health & happiness. But I can’t.
There is no magic pill.
However, there is a way to shift the balance so there are fewer lousy days and many more days of embracing life fully.
I’m not gonna lie—this path can be rough. You don’t know how many times I’ve said, “I’m done,” “I quit,” and “I give up.”
But I don’t quit. I recommit.
Why? Because I refuse to let chronic stress and chronic illness get the best of me. And mostly–
because having the energy, clarity, and enthusiasm to do what I love is totally worth it.
